Vittoriosa from the air

Vittoriosa is one of the peninsulas on the south-east edge of the Grand Harbour of Valletta. The depth of the harbour and its central location in the Mediterranean Sea has given it strategic importance for the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Normans, the Knights of St John, and the British Navy.

Fort St Angelo is a major defensive structure built by the Knights of St John on the site of earlier fortifications of the Romans and the Normans. It occupies the tip of the Vittoriosa peninsula and dominates the southern part of the Grand Harbour. The Caraffa Stores is one of a series of buildings constructed by the Knights along Vittoriosa Waterfront, visible to the right of the Fort in this photograph:

Further along the landward side of the waterfront there is a series of excellent restaurents (Tate, Sottovento, Manchuria, and Two and a Half Lemon) and an ice-cream parlour (Twist). These are nestled alongside the Maritime Museum, which is seen below.
