METAGEUM '07
EXPLORING THE MEGALITHIC MIND

CONFERENCE, TOUR, AND WORKSHOPS:
Exploring the Consciousness of the Megalithic Temple Builders
Caraffa Stores, Birgu, Island of Malta
3rd - 11th November 2007

The Venue: The Caraffa Stores Vaults

The photographs below show you the venue, The Caraffa Stores, as the empty shell of the 1680 building as it is now. This will be transformed by the Metageum team into a functioning conference space that preserves an authentic sense of immediate connection with Malta's history. Walking on the same flagstones that the Knights trod, you will be invited to project your imagination much further into time, to the earliest civilisations.

Ground floor

The ground floor comprises two large barrel vaults, about 30 yards long by 10 yards across, with vertical walls up to about seven feet, topped by tall vaulted ceiling. Both vaults have large doors opening out onto the marina waterfront, topped by a window allowing a lot of light in.

First floor

The first floor comprises two smaller barrel vaults, with the same floor plan as the those on the ground floor (about 30 yards long by 10 yards across), but with a vaulted ceiling curving to the floor. Both vaults have large shuttered windows opening out over the waterfront.

Second floor

The second floor comprises four vaults, with comparatively lower ceilings compose of steel joists with wooden floor boards. These rooms have a very different ambience and acoustics from the stone vaults below them. They have the same general floor plan as the those on the ground floor (about 30 yards long by 10 yards across), but with the third floor slicing through the central area. Huge dormer windows are shared with the second and third floors. The two central vaults on this floor stand directly above the vaults on the lower flowers, but there is one extra vault on either side. In addition, there is side room on the eastern end, with double-height ceiling but small floor area (about seven yards square).
