At Metageum '07

Jeni will be exhibiting her new installation, entitled 'Hypogeum', a vortex of sound and painting that evokes the atmosphere of the underground temple of the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni. Also, with Julie Apap, she will be running a creativity workshop themed on the temples: Insights - Opening Portals to Personal Creativity: A Mixed-Media Workshop (see the workshop page for details).

About Jeni Caruana

Jeni is well known in Malta for her striking paintings of the prehistoric temples. They combine her keen sense of observation and ability to record detail accurately with a deep intuitive expression of feelings and impressions that go beyond ordinary vision. Beginning each work within the walls of these ancient sacred spaces, absorbing and recording the unique atmosphere, she then takes them back to her studio to allow each one to develop its own individual message.

Jeni teaches drawing and watercolour in Malta, and tutors painting holidays for Malta Art.

Mnajdra

The Megalithic temples of Malta are the oldest free-standing structures in the world, dating back to c. 2800 - 2000 BC and therefore pre-dating the Pyramids.

The temple at Mnajdra is situated on the beautiful south-west coast of Malta, overlooking the sea and the tiny island of Filfla. Consisting of two adjoining temples, the lower one has been shown align accurately with the solar transition between equinoxes and solstices. Mnajdra is said to be a fertility temple, designed to echo the shape of Goddess statuettes found both here and in other temple sites.

Dreaming in the sun, Mnajdra is a magical place of mystery and fascination.
